Amethyst Facts February's traditional birthstone and the suggested stone for the 6th anniversary, Amethyst is the most valued member of the quartz family and can be found in numerous shades of purple, lilac and mauve. Its purple coloration has made it a stone of royalty for thousands of years. It is found in geodes and alluvial deposits around the world and occurs in crystalline or massive form. It is the presence of manganese in clear quartz which produces amethyst and additional iron which varies the purple coloration. Mohs' Hardness: 7 Metaphysical PropertiesAmethyst has long been thought of as a "stone of spirituality and contentment," helping to clear the aura and balance the energies of the physical, mental and emotional bodies. It brings peace, stability and strength to the wearer. It opens and activates the crown chakra and facilitates one in achieving and maintaining a calm and peaceful state. Healing & Medicinal QualitiesThroughout history Amethyst has been used to guard against inebriation and is thought to be helpful in overcoming addiction. It has been used for hearing disorders, insomnia, headaches and other pain, and to stimulate the sympathetic nervous system. It can be used in treating disorders of the heart, stomach and digestive tract, nervous system, skin and teeth. It is also thought to help stabilize mental disorders. TreatmentsAlmost all Amethyst on the market today is heat-treated to achieve it's best color. Heat treating is considered a permanent treatment and should not fade over time. Assume that any amethyst you purchase has been heat treated unless it is otherwise specified.
